Beware the Husband Hunter

Beware the Husband Hunter
Why Some Women Go For Guys Who Are Taken
May 28, 2010

By Elise Nersesian

A sparkly engagement ring used to be the symbol of ultimate security for single girls. However, a dangerous ilk of women is on the rise — those who don't consider a wedding band a deterrent, while searching for Mr. Right. They crave the excitement of a passionate romance, but one with an added challenge on top. In other words: They want your boyfriend or husband and aren't the least bit afraid to go after him.

If the tabloids are any indication, one may assume that chasing married men is largely a habit formed in Hollywood — from Rachel Uchitel's recent confession to bedding actor David Boreanaz (a married father of two), to stripper Michelle “Bombshell” McGee's tryst with Sandra Bullock's soon-to-be ex Jesse James, to (insert name of stripper-Playmate-bottle girl)'s fling with shamed golfer Tiger Woods.

However, this recent batch of philandering female star-chasers is indicative of a real-life trend that's been taking place for a while, say scientists at Oklahoma State University.

In a prominent and highly publicized study, researchers divided bachelorettes into two groups and showed them photographs of a hot guy — telling one group he was single and the other he was in a relationship; then, they asked the women how likely they were to pursue him. Only when the woman believed he was committed to someone else did interest in the male subject skyrocket.

So what gives? It's not like mate poaching is a new concept. The idea of seeking several partners — even those who are taken — well, that's classic Darwinian thinking. However, some experts say the more sexual equality females gain in society, the more Rachel Uchitel types are likely to come crawling out of the woodwork.

“Research shows that in societies where women are economically powerful, the more sexually and socially aggressive they are,” says anthropologist Helen Fisher, Ph.D., author of Why We Love. “And today, with more men out of work than women (due to the recession cutting more male-oriented jobs), we're seeing women become bolder in every area of their lives.”

There's even a chemical explanation for why many women pursue guys in relationships. “Any block to romantic love drives up dopamine — a brain chemical associated with love and reward,” says Fisher. “That brain rush can feel addictive.”

And, for the female mate poacher who Oklahoma researchers say bases her self-esteem on her looks and romantic status, that brain rush can be an intoxicating and driving force, causing her to view already-committed men with rose-colored glasses.

“Men in relationships have already proven their willingness to commit, which is a major draw to these women,” says Ian Kerner, Ph.D., sex and relationship therapist. “The possibility of landing him may make her feel special and maybe even superior.”

But this high doesn't last for long. Expending all their energy on already- committed men is a risky business, says Kerner. That's because these men are often happy to have sex on the side, but are rarely willing to leave their wives or girlfriends.

Proof can be gleaned from Michelle McGee's infamous quote in Steppin' Out magazine: “I think men are made to spread their seed. Women need to accept that. If you're going to be married to somebody, you need to know that men are not meant to be with one woman. I think you can totally love your spouse and still sleep with other women. That urge will always be there, if you're a man. I believe you can love your wife 100 percent and still stray.”

But in the end, both women get shafted. “The problem is, by expending all their energy on men in relationships, female mate poachers are overlooking potential guys who could be compatible long-term mates,” says Kerner.

Yet, sometimes it does work out. Angelina Jolie — no doubt our generation's most famous mate-poacher — snatched Brad Pitt from Jennifer Aniston; five years and six kids later, they seem to be going strong. But in Angie's darkest hour, does she ever wonder whether one day she could become the next scorned wife?

December 2007 National Status By Iacocca

Too bad Lee is almost 80. He might make a good president.

Lee Iacocca Says:

"Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening?

Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, "Stay the course"

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America , not the damned "Titanic". I'll give you a sound bite: "Throw all the bums out!"

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq , the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the "America" my parents and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged. This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have.

The Biggest "C" is Crisis !

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory. Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A Hell of a Mess. So here's where we stand.

We're immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving. We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the country. We're losing the manufacturing edge to Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble. Our borders are like sieves. The middle class is being squeezed every which way. These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you've got to ask: "Where have all the leaders gone?" Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo? We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane, or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.

Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn't happen again. Now, that's just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan. Figure out what you're going to do the next time.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when "The Big Three" referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debt, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn't elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough?

Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope I believe in America.

In my lifetime I've had the privilege of living through some of America's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: the "Great Depression", "World War II", the "Korean War", the "Kennedy Assassination", the "Vietnam War", the 1970s oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11. If I've learned one thing, it's this: "You don't get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it's building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That's the challenge I'm raising in this book. It's a call to "Action" for people who, like me, believe in America . It's not too late, but it's getting pretty close.

So let's shake off the crap and go to work. Let's tell 'em all we've had "enough."

Tea Baggers

Everything that was stated in the email Rita sent along made me mad. Mad as hell, but I am not sure what I could have done to stop any of it. On the other hand I am not as sure as you sound that the elections that you mentioned actually mean what you think they do or that the coming elections, however they turn out, will make much difference either. It’s not that simple.

People are jumping up and down about socialist policies. Medicare and Medicaid fall under the idea of socialist programs and most people who are on them seem to like them and wouldn’t want to get rid of them. Why is it that when we work to help the people of our country, so many people can’t seem to just think of how the particular program will help. Some socialist programs are not necessarily bad. I feel that most people who complain about such policies think of them as Communism or Communist Socialism, but they are not the same. The programs that are being initiated in this country would fall under Democratic Socialism; something that should be good in a Democratic country. We should be trying to make things better for the middle and lower classes and that is what these programs are designed to do.

I agree with and/or understand many of the points you are making, but I also feel that I cannot know all that goes on in Washington. I understand that you have to do a great deal of compromising to get things done there. It seems like a very difficult position to be in and no bill is ever going to be just what everyone wants. Early on in this health care debate I was angry that many members of congress kept saying, “We have to get something passed and then go about fixing it”. I now understand that idea. You have to start by coming up with something that you can get enough votes on. Then go about making it better.

I am mad as hell that big corporations, lobbyists, and other rich people are running this country and making themselves richer and richer at the expense of the rest of us. We need some really good laws, without loopholes, that will direct much of that money away from them and give it to those of us who actually need it. No, I really don’t like more and more laws, but since we have this growing rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer situation along with an ever growing population, I feel we have to have more laws. Most of us need the protection.

Anyway I could keep going on and on, but that’s it for the moment.

Rita,

Actually, most of America (not just the Tea Baggers) is mad because of …

socialistic policies

a government which can’t manage anything without incredible overhead which is now trying to operate businesses

tactics to pass legislation in spite of what the American public thinks as a whole

elitist policies and comments by the majority leaders of both parties

a government health care system largely modeled after Massachusetts and Tennessee’s systems, both of which are bankrupting those states per their Treasurers

a blatant false promise from Pelosi about cleaning up ethics

blatant false priority promises by Obama

the White House and Congress focusing on a liberal social agenda for over a year and handing out billions of dollars (just like the Bush treasury) before barely addressing the jobless situation

those same elitists trying to tell the American public what we felt and meant when the majority party lost Gubernatorial elections in NJ and VA, and then lost Ted Kennedy’s seat in Massachusetts

140 bank failures in 2009 vs. 28 in 2008 while handouts were given to big Corporations that didn’t need them

the current record pace of bank failures in 2010.

Yes, many people didn’t like the Bush White House. They also didn’t like Pelosi as Speaker of the House, Obama’s main ally, the last two years of the Bush Administration. She still has the lowest public approval of any national politician.

Attack the Tea Baggers all you want, but the voting public is mad as hell, and the Tea Baggers are just a subset. I’m not a tea bagger, and I don’t know any tea baggers. I do know November is coming, and I personally can’t wait.

We had eight years of Bush and Cheney, Now you get mad!?

You didn't get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and
appointed a President.

You didn't get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate
energy policy.

You didn't get mad when a covert CIA operative got outed.

You didn't get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.
You didn't get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.

You didn't get mad when we spent over 600 billion(and counting) on said illegal war.

You didn't get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq.

You didn't get mad when you found out we were torturing people.

You didn't get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.

You didn't get mad when we didn't catch Bin Laden.

You didn't get mad when you saw the horrible conditions at Walter Reed.

You didn't get mad when we let a major US city, New Orleans, drown.
You didn't get mad when we gave a 900 billion tax break to the rich.

You didn't get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.

You finally got mad when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick. Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, are all okay with you, but helping other Americans...oh hell no.

Conservatives Think They Are The Enlighten Ones

Snopes says this is true as do others on the internet.

Subject: A LETTER FROM A PROCTER AND GAMBLE EXECUTIVE TO THE PRESIDENT
THE LAST SENTENCE IS THE MOST CHILLING

Lou Pritchett is one of corporate America 's true living legends - an acclaimed author, dynamic teacher and one of the world's highest rated speakers. Successful corporate executives everywhere recognize him as the foremost leader in change management. Lou changed the way America does business by creating an audacious concept that came to be known as "partnering." Pritchett rose from soap salesman to Vice-President, Sales and Customer Development for Procter and Gamble and over the course of 36 years, made corporate history.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

Dear President Obama:

You are the thirteenth President under whom I have lived and unlike any of the others, you truly scare me.
You scare me because after months of exposure, I know nothing about you.
You scare me because I do not know how you paid for your expensive Ivy League education and your upscale lifestyle and housing with no visible signs of support.
You scare me because you did not spend the formative years of youth growing up in America and culturally you are not an American.
You scare me because you have never run a company or met a payroll.
You scare me because you have never had military experience, thus don't understand it at its core.
You scare me because you lack humility and 'class', always blaming others.
You scare me because for over half your life you have aligned yourself with radical extremists who hate America and you refuse to publicly denounce these radicals who wish to see America fail..
You scare me because you are a cheerleader for the 'blame America' crowd and deliver this message abroad.

You scare me because you want to change America to a European style country where the government sector dominates instead of the private sector.

You scare me because you want to replace our health care system with a government controlled one.
You scare me because you prefer 'wind mills' to responsibly capitalizing on our own vast oil, coal and shale reserves.
You scare me because you want to kill the American capitalist goose that lays the golden egg which provides the highest standard of living in the world.
You scare me because you have begun to use 'extortion' tactics against certain banks and corporations.
You scare me because your own political party shrinks from challenging you on your wild and irresponsible spending proposals.

You scare me because you will not openly listen to or even consider opposing points of view from intelligent people.
You scare me because you falsely believe that you are both omnipotent and omniscient.
You scare me because the media gives you a free pass on everything you do.
You scare me because you demonize and want to silence the Limbaugh's, Hannitys, O'Reillys and Becks who offer opposing, conservative points of view.
You scare me because you prefer controlling over governing.
Finally, you scare me because if you serve a second term I will probably not feel safe in writing a similar letter in 8 years.

Lou Pritchett

This letter was sent to the NY Times but they never acknowledged it. Big surprise. Since it hit the internet, however, it has had over 500,000 hits. Keep it going. All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing.. It's happening right now.

We Are That Generation that Had The Dream

I do not fear our future, I hate our past. Only a foll keeps doing the same things and expect a different outcome
I am a retired IT professional, we fixed things logically. Logically if we do A then we will get result B, and if we
do nothing, we will get the same results or worse we will have a crisis. Does this sound familiar...end of Bush administration
in America and a $700 billion money drop before we dropped into the black hole. HOLD UP..we are stabilizing OK!!!!!

I do not care what privileged American accomplish, if they do not do well in America they should have to face the founding
fathers of this nation. You see when you have an uneven playing field you run downhill all the time and should accomplish much.
I am more excited to see a President in the United States of any nationality other than the norm, man or woman who has made
great accomplishments and should be recognized for them. What is going on in DC is unacceptable. I may not agree with everything
our president says but I believe in America and feel it is time that we stop this bullshit and get back in gear before China leaves us so far
behind that they will be negotiating with North Korea over who controls the free worlds.

I say this is a bunch of bullshit, healthcare is already controlled by the government and always will be, I felt that this issue
should have been crammed thru like a pile driver thru soft cheese months ago before we lost the Public Option..
Now we got a watered down bill that really has baby teeth, I do not appreciate what the conservatives have done to this
country in the last 20 years and will not drop it at this administrations feet nor all at G W Bushes feet even-though he was at
the stern when the ship ran aground. This group of conservatives must go, we got to get the country moving and being broke
is not the way to get the wheels turning, so we spend ourselves out of a recession before it becomes a depression and then
take the money recovered from business generated to continue to power the machine while paying our debts, sounds like our
household to me.

We as that new generation will be judged by this blunder for years to comer as we reduced the shine of America from
sea to shining sea. We have rightfully allow those like Limbaugh, Hannity, O'Reilly and Beck to spew their hatred, lies and poison
across this great country, which is their right by the constitution, but to but into such bullshit is beyond me. I though civilized
people thought for themselves and did their own research but now we have a herd being led to the slaughter by a group of fools that
cannot even believe the lies they tell. Hate mongers and naysayers will always be on this earth and they will always want that 1950s
America that 99% of the rest of us are glad will never come back.

Any fool in America knows everything from the research to the pill, the pill bottle, and it's inscriptions on that bottle is controlled
from Washington. Do you recall when George Bush said that stem cell research was wrong and now we are 8 years farther behind
the research of curing diseases, and growing limbs and spinal cord research. Folks wake up from this nightmare and stop letting the
Conservative say the public does not want healthcare, WHAT DAMN PUBLIC, have they become the public and speaks for the rest of us.
Even some on medicare are against healthcare reform and they do not even know what the hell it is about.

Half the new projects in America are powered by stimulus money, I have not seen any teachers raising hell because it saved their jobs.
I have not hear anyone that refused the money they got back as stimulus at federal tax time or the FICA reduction on their paychecks.
I think it is time to research alternative energy, I had solar panels back in the late 70's installed on my home, it made a big difference.
In the late 1990's I got ready to retire and remodeled, unfortunately that was one thing I let go.

Too many of us are buying into the hype and not doing any research, or is it selected amnesia, my Mom told me
to always try to come up on the side of right and that is where I will strive to be and I think we are headed in a better
direction than we were a year ago.

Do not stop sending your opinions and I will not stop voicing mine, I know not many will voice their opinions on these issues
they will forward them as they are as if they believe them whole heartily or delete them. It is interesting to see how we as a generation
think of life in America today. I am on Facebook under the same name.
Much love from the other side of the issue.

The Black Jesus

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It's a familiar image for millions of Christians: Jesus Christ, with a crown of thorns, hanging from the cross. What color is he? In a controversial new film opening Friday, he is black.
"Color of the Cross" tells a traditional story, focusing on the last 48 hours of his life as told in the Gospels. In this version, though, race contributes to his persecution.
It is the first representation in the history of American cinema of Jesus as a black man.
"It's very important because (the film) is going to provide an image of Jesus for African-Americans that is no longer under the control of whites," says Stephenson Humphries-Brooks, an associate professor of religious studies at New York's Hamilton College and author of "Cinematic Savior: Hollywood's Making of the American Christ."

What Jesus looked like has long been debated by theologians around the world. Different cultures have imagined him in different ways, says Stephen Prothero, chairman of the religion department at Boston University. In Japan, Jesus looks Japanese. In Africa, he is black. But in America he is almost always white, like the fair-haired savior painted by Leonardo Da Vinci in "The Last Supper" in 1495.
While some black churches have images of a black Jesus behind the altar and others have claimed Christ was black, Prothero says "none of those arguments or images have filtered much into the mainstream."
Filmmaker Jean Claude LaMarre set out to change that with "Color of the Cross." LaMarre, who plays Jesus, wrote, directed and financed the film. It will open in 30 theaters in predominantly black neighborhoods.
"Black people in this country are the only race of people who worship a god outside their own image," says LaMarre, 38, adding that showing Christ as a black man is "the most poignant way to deal with the issue of race in this country because it goes to the heart of how we look at the world."

It also provides a positive image of blacks, something that's been scant in the U.S., says the Rev. Cecil "Chip" Murray, longtime leader of L.A.'s First African Methodist Episcopal Church and a producer of the film.
"It could be revolutionary because, for four centuries in our nation, blacks have been at the lowest end of the stratum," he says. "I think it will traumatize the United States more than it will foreign nations who, to some extent, don't have a centuries-old concept of equating black with negativity."
Humphries-Brooks agrees. Other countries are likely to view the film "in a more detached manner," he says, "because of the way (they) see our race-relations problem."
Why does race matter in the story of Christ?
"Jesus isn't in the hands of historians," Prothero says. "What we have now is our own debate and, in that debate, race has to be a factor because race is a big predicament in American life."
Film is a powerful place to have the discussion, says Humphries-Brooks, who calls the medium "one of the last places that is quasi-public for the formation of values in America."
"Artistic and aesthetic views are as important in developing religious values as the words we speak. Everybody goes to the movies. Not everybody goes to the same church."
Filmmaker LaMarre thinks the film can only have a positive effect.
"The message is that color, a colored Jesus Christ, doesn't matter," he says. "That's why the movie is important. When you have one prevailing image out there, it suggests color does matter."
